Jane Austen Writes Elizabeth Bennet
“ …she really does seem to admire Elizabeth. I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print…”
Jane Austen 1813
“Pride & Prejudice” – perhaps Jane Austen’s most famous novel, was published in 1813. How much of Jane appears in her heroine Elizabeth we can only speculate, but her letters from that time to her sister Cassandra, are full of the excitement and expectation of youth. Of balls and assemblies, of dancing and suppers, of fashion and flirtations, of handsome young men. In writing “Pride & Prejudice” and more importantly her heroine, Jane was writing about a world she knew and of which she was a keen observer.
